To Bee or Not To Bee Blog Hop

Hello everyone!!! :o)

It's been quite a while since I've posted here on my blog. Being a working from home mommy of a toddler is very challenging, but also super fun, so I don't find time to blog often anymore. Well here I am today with some of my friends, bringing you 5th To Bee or Not To Bee Blog Hop. :o)

To Bee or Not To Bee Blog Hop is a special annual blog hop supporting bees (and other pollinators) and celebrating World Bee Day, which is on May 20th. This year we are hopping a bit later and not actually on a World Bee Day, as I couldn't organize it earlier. Last year we paused, as I was new mommy and it was difficult for me to organize a blog hop with a small baby.

I've invited some of my crafty friends, whom I admire greatly, to hop along with me, and I have some amazing sponsors lined up with gifts to give away to You! :o)

Aim of the hop is to support bees and bees protectionto raise public awareness of the importance of bees and beekeeping and benefits of using apicultural products for our health.

Bees and other pollinators are very important for ensuring food quality, as well as preserving the entire ecosystem and natural biodiversity. Bees provide a wide range of benefits to humans from pollination of food crops and apicultural products.

Interesting facts...
  • "Bees pollinate as many as 170,000 species of plants.
  • Without bees, there would not be so many different kinds of fruits and vegetables, or such beautiful colors on the lawn.
  • A bee colony is as big as a small town. There are from 30,000 to 60,000 bees in each colony.
  • The queen bee is the only one that lays eggs. She lays up to 2,000 eggs per day.
  • Out of 20,000 species of bees, only one is widely used for commercial honey production.
  • The Carniolan honey bee, Apis mellifera carnica, is an indigenous Slovenian race of bee and the second most widespread bee race in the world.
  • Honey bees’ wings strike 11,400 times per minute, thus making their distinctive buzz.
  • Honey bees are the only bees that die after they sting.
  • To make one kilogram of honey, the bees have to visit 4 million flowers and fly four times the distance around the world."

What can we do to protect bees and other pollinators...
  • "Care for the environment and avoid harming it.
  • Plant a variety of nectar-bearing plants and native species that bloom form spring to autumn to provide food for pollinators.
  • Provide a welcoming environment for solitary bees and other pollinators with a feeder hut/shelter.
  • Mow lawn less often and when bees are not present (i.e. early morning or late afternoon).
  • Seek out local beekeepers and support them by buying bee products.
  • Educate our community about the importance of bees and encourage pollinator-friendly campaigns and events."

And here is what I created for today's hop: Happy BEE Day Card. :o)

I made this card for my niece Tea who will be turning 12 this month (I can't believe how time flies... she grew in a blink of an eye). :o)

How I made my card...

I stamped a hexagon pattern from Jane's Doodles 'Geometric Patterns' stamp set (the set is discontinued) in watermark technique with VersaMark Ink on a Kraft cardstock paper scrap. I cut the stripe to a preferable size and glued it on a white top folded cardstock paper.

Then I stamped a sentiment from Uniko 'Bee Happy' clear stamp set on a white cardstock paper panel.
I wanted to add some dimension and raise a bit the panel, but I was lazy to glue tiny foam squares (it takes ages... my least favorite part of cardmaking). I cut two rectangles from the white cardstock paper, slightly smaller than the panel, glued them together and glued the panel on top. I glued everything on the card base. Perfect! Done in couple minutes, dimension achieved and no foam used. LOL :o)

Next up were bees. I used super cute tiny Bee from Purple Onion Designs, Stacey Yacula Studio 'Net, Butterfly and Bee' rubber stamps. So so cute. I stamped the bee on the white cardstock paper twice, fussy cut bees leaving white thin border around them. Then I stamped bees on a watercolor paper and colored them in watercolor technique using Distress Inks. I fussy cut bees, traced edges with a black marker and glued watercolored bees over bees stamped on the cardstock paper. I did this to make images thicker, because the watercolor paper I use is very thin. I've could used thicker watercolor paper, but the image is so tiny it's impossible to fussy cut it nicely when stamped on a thicker watercolor paper that I have.

Lastly, I glued some foam squares on the back of each bee, glued them on the card and my card was finished. :o)

Card measurements: 89 mm x 120 mm (3 1/2" x 4 3/4")

I love how my card turned out!!! :o)

Jane's Doodles Warm Hugs Release Blog Hop

    Happy Friday! :o)

Welcome to a Jane's Doodles Warm Hugs Release Blog HopToday we are featuring a BEAUTIFUL 'Warm Hugs' stamp set released into the store. :o) We also have 5 amazing super talented Guest Designers joining us today. :o)

    Beautiful!!! Love love LOVE!!!!! :o)

And here is what I prepared for today: Thankful For You Card. :o)

    How I made this Card...

For my card I used most stamps from the set. I love to create my own backgrounds. It's a great way to use as much as possible stamps from one set. I call that good use of the set. :o)

First I arranged tinny stamps on an acrylic block and randomly stamped tiny images from the set on a Kraft paper panel in watermark stamping technique using VersaMark Watermark Ink. I filled gaps by stamping one by one image in gaps. After drying, I stamped the sentiment in black on the panel.

I cut and folded a card base, slightly larger than the panel. I also cut 3 more panels from the Kraft paper. I glued (stacked) two panels together. I did this to add some dimension on my card, as I don't have any foam sheet in my stash and to glue 3-D foam squares on the entire panel was not an option. I glued the stamped panel on stacked panels and glued them on the card base. Last, 3rd panel, I glued inside the card to make it sturdier.

Then stamped a bear and leaves on a thick watercolor paper and colored images in watercolor technique with Caran D'Ache Prismalo Aquarelle colored pencils. After drying, I fussy cut images leaving white thin border around them. I glued 3-D foam squares (2 different thickness) on the back of each image and glued them on the card and my card was finished. :o)

I love how my card turned out!! :o)

At the bottom of this post you can find detailed supply lists of my today's card. Link to this post will be in a right sidebar until the Blog Hop ends. :o)

      Jane's Doodles Release Blog Hop

      Hi everyone! :o)

Welcome to a Jane's Doodles Release Blog HopToday we are featuring a gorgeous 'What the Fig!' stamp set released into the store. :o) We also have 2 super talented Guest Designers and a new DT member joining us today. :o)

      GORGEOUS!!!! Love love LOVE!!!!! :o)

And here is what I prepared for today: Happy Figgin' Birthday Card. :o)

I made this one for my honey's birthday, which is today. :o) Happy Birthday hon!!! ♥

      How I made this Card...

For my card I used all stamps from the set, except one sentiment. I love to create my own backgrounds. It's a great way to use as much as possible stamps from one set. I call that good use of the set. :o)

First I randomly stamped images on a Kraft paper panel in watermark stamping technique using VersaMark Watermark Ink. After drying, I stamped the sentiment in black on the panel.

I cut and folded a card base and 5 more panels from the Kraft paper. I cut 4 panels slightly smaller than the panel with stamped background and glued (stacked) them together. I did this to add some dimension on my card, as I didn't have enough foam to do that. I glued the stamped panel on stacked panels and glued them on the card base. Last, 5th panel, I glued inside the card to make it sturdier.

Then stamped a fig on a thick watercolor paper and colored it in watercolor technique with Distress Inks. After drying, I fussy cut the fig leaving white thin border around it. I glued 3-D foam squares on the back of the image and placed it on the card.

As a finishing touch, I drew white highlights on the fig and my card was finished. :o)

I like it, but is it enough masculine and will my honey like it, I'll know later today, when I'll give him the card at a small family birthday gathering. I decided to go with figs because we both love figs. :o)

Do you like figs? When it comes to fresh figs, I like one variety, don't know how it's called, but those figs have greenish/yellowish skin. But when it comes to dried figs, I can't stop eating them. Absolutely my favorite dried fruit. :o)

In Dalmatia, region of Croatia, they make delicious dried fig cake called Smokvenjak. It is my favorite energy snack.

"When compared with other fruit, the juicy and filling fig holds a special place in Dalmatian cuisine. During summer there is no sweeter taste than a freshly picked fig full of sweet juice which serves as a refreshment from the heat, the sea and the sun. Apart from eating them fresh, lots of picked figs are dried every year in order to preserve them during winter, when they are eaten on their own or in numerous tasty cakes. One of these is the fig cake, which used to be an everyday snack for field workers because it provides plenty of energy. Nowadays it is prepared for holidays or celebrations and is served as an aperitif before meals.
The traditional fig cake is considered to have originated on Croatian islands which abound in fig trees. This sweet dessert requires only a couple of ingredients, but it is very filling and delicious, and stays fresh for a long time which is why it has often been prepared as a travel snack. As its name indicates, fig cake or hib is prepared from dried figs, mixed with almonds, brandy or maraschino, powdered sugar and bay leaf for more flavour. The figs are first cut into small pieces or ground, and then combined with roasted and crushed almonds. Brandy is added to the mixture slowly and carefully so that all the ingredients blend well. The packed mixture of almonds and figs is formed into loaves and sprinkled with fresh bay leaves, or other Mediterranean plants such as rosemary or sage.
The basic recipe for fig cake can be altered according to taste, preferences and circumstances, so that instead of brandy the juice of any citrus fruit can be added, such as orange juice and its zest, or fennel seeds, different spices, as well as walnuts and raisins. Fig cake can be eaten immediately, but in order to be able to cut it, the moulded fig cakes need to be dried for some time. Nowadays this is done in the oven on low temperatures for up to an hour, so that the fig cake becomes a little harder. Individual fig cakes are wrapped in paper to prevent them from drying and for easier storage and transportation. These days, fig cakes are a popular souvenir among tourists in Croatia."

If you'll be visiting Croatia or will find Smokvenjak in a grocery store or have an option to buy it online, I would highly recommend to buy it. Not only it's delicious (if you like dried figs and almonds), it's healthy too. :o)

Jane's Doodles BREW-TEA-FUL Release Blog Hop

        Happy Friday! :o)

Welcome to a Jane's Doodles BREW-TEA-FUL Release Blog HopToday we are featuring a gorgeous 'BREW-TEA-FUL' stamp set released into the store. :o) We also have 3 super talented Guest Designers joining us today. :o)

        GORGEOUS!!!! Love love LOVE!!!!! :o)

And here is what I prepared for today: Yellow Teapot Goodie Bag. :o)

I made this one for my mom for Mother's Day, which is here in Croatia on Sunday, May 9th this year. I'll put some chocolate treats and tiny note card inside. :o)

How I made this Goodie Bag...

First I die cut goodie bag parts from a Kraft paper. To create my own patterned paper, I randomly stamped a teapot and tea mugs on die-cut pieces in watermark stamping technique using VersaMark Watermark Ink. I mixed a white tempera color with a bit of water and splattered the patterned paper and left it dry on air. After drying I assembled the goodie bag.

Next up was the teapot image. It's so pretty!! :o)

stamped the teapot on a watercolor paper and fixed some lines with a black fine liner, as I didn't stamp entire image well. I colored the teapot in watercolor technique with Distress Inks. After drying, I fussy cut the teapot and traced edges with a black marker.

Then I stamped the teapot again on a white cardstock paper. I fussy cut the teapot, leaving white border around it. I glued the watercolored teapot over it. I did this to make the image thicker, as the watercolor paper I use is very thin and I needed thicker image.

I wanted a simple look of the teapot, so I left floral details white. I just run with a white gel pen over white parts, to hide tiny smears of yellow. :o)

If you follow my blog, you know I love dimension on my projects. This one was no exception. :o) I glued 3-D foams on the back of the teapot and glued it on the front side of the bag. :o)

I left the back side of the bag without additional image.

As a finishing touch, I laced up a twine and my Goodie Bag was finished. :o)

I love how my Goodie Bag turned out!! I'm sure my mom will love it. :o)

At the bottom of this post you can find detailed supply lists of my today's project. Link to this post will be in a right sidebar until the Blog Hop ends. :o)
